Massively hungover from my celebrations following England's trouncing of Croatia on Wednesday, I played yesterday with my usual bout of 6max 1/2nl and somehow won just under $700 after 1000 hands. Nothing of note really, just loads of clowns not getting lucky. Another nice boost towards me filling the hole I dug in August.
I even decided to go down to the pub and play the poker game that goes on there on a Thursday. As with any pub game the skill level is laughable. People call river value bets with bottom pair, even ten high etc. Only problem is the crappy structure. Starts at 9pm, then at 11.15pm the prizes are awarded to 1st in chips (75% of pot) and 2nd in chips (25% of pot). Last time I played I came 3rd and got nothing for being about 200 chips out of 30,000 behind 2nd. The game is ridiculously easy to crush though, so I expect to still be in the game at the end 90% of the time.
Actually that's not the only problem. The landlord who runs the game doesn't really know the rules of the game. Say the blinds are 100/200, if someone were to raise to 600, the min raise should be to 1000 right? Well because of the host's inability to actually learn the rules of poker, you have to actually double the bet at least, so you have to make it 1200. Then the next raise would have to be 2400 instead of etc etc... Also when the man in the small blind got knocked out, and the button got moved on I suggested we follow the rules of tournament poker and have a dead button so that nobody gets to miss the BB.
Me: 'The button should just stay there for this hand so that he doesn't miss his big blind'
Landlord: 'Nope, the button always moves on.'
Ok whatever.
All this being said, the game is just for fun I suppose, and so soft that it's worth playing in. Well last night I got down to heads up out of 12 players when 11.15 rolls around and the game ends. I had about 2/5 of the chips so I get a measly £15 instead of the £45 I would be pretty much guarenteed to win if it were a normal game. Im not going to complain though, everyone knows the rules before the game starts. Actually Ive noticed all I ever do in this blog is complain.
Still $5500 in the hole but that's 1/4 of the way out now.
